Lis Johnson
sculptor

Primarily a modeller and carver, Lis Johnson is a figurative sculptor who works with a wide range of contemporary and traditional media. Commissioned work often utilises her ability to faithfully render reality, especially natural and human forms, while her original artworks venture into the conceptual realm. Lis works at both ends of the scale spectrum, on the one hand creating large public statuary and, on the other, capturing aspects of life through intimate vignettes, figurines and organic forms.

Lis has practiced sculpture professionally since 1990. Formally trained in art history, theory, research and practice in the 1980s, Lis proceeded to exhibit work in numerous group, solo and selective exhibitions. She has been contracted to create three-dimensional artwork for architects, designers, other artists, museums and zoos, the display, theatre and film industries, as well as private clients. She enjoys teaching sculpture, with experience in the private, secondary and tertiary sectors.

Lis has been awarded some significant public art commissions including the Illawarra Coalmining Memorial, St George Illawarra Centenary Rugby League Sculpture, the Vietnam War Memorial in Victoria, and recently, several large bronze statues of sports heroes surrounding the MCG.
